Stephanie Brown is an artist of Jamaican descent from Delray Beach, Florida where she grew up. She attended Savannah College of Art and Design where she earned her BFA in Photography in 2014. After two years of working freelance and teaching photography in youth and adult community centers, Stephanie received the opportunity to pursue her MFA at the University of Michigan.
Stephanie’s art practice aims to encourage conversation concerning the construction of racial identity. Drawing from the fields of psychology and African-American history, she often incorporates material culture and oral/written histories within her work.
As a Caribbean American, she is motivated by the complexity of identity and the cyclical social irony within her own race from previous generations mirrored in today’s society. Her graduate work marries photography, object making, and installation to create thought provoking imagery. With this new work, she hopes to inspire her viewers to think and act accordingly.
